Project TitleMethod of Using Ankle Weights for Postpartum Weight Loss
Track Code2016-039
Short Description

A method of using passive weights to induce weight loss in post-partum women.

Abstract

Although the benefits of physical activity (PA) across all populations are well established, less than half of all Americans meet the national guidelines for exercise (CDC). Lack of time is among the strongest perceived barriers to the implementation of regular PA. Overcoming this barrier may be particularly difficult for new mothers. Researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital have developed a simple, inexpensive, and practical physical activity intervention, incorporating the use of body weights worn during typical daily activities (e.g. cooking, cleaning, childcare, etc.), that would require no additional time on the mother’s part and could also lay the groundwork for successful prevention or delay of chronic diseases in future.
